Dexter is one of my favorite shows on Showtime and has been popular for quite some time; which was why I was surprised to hear of a news report stating that a 17 year old in Cincinnati killed his 10 year old brother and was inspired by the show.
He told police that “I just feel like him” without any remorse or emotion. The ways that he killed his younger brother was too disturbing to elaborate on so if you want to know the details you can go here.
Although this murder took place December 2009, I still hear about every now and then on other news channels too. It also reminds me of the whole debate with the video game Grand Theft Auto and how some kids were inspired by the video game and went on a little crime spree of their own. It got so much attention that the video game was banned in Australia.
I guess incidents like these remind me of the old “chicken or the egg” debate. If kids like these are already predisposed to violent behavior, I don’t think it really matters what they watch or play. I don’t think you can blame TV and video games for behavior like this. Simply put, bad people will always do bad things no matter what they play or watch.
